QUESTION: WHAT IS GOD'S ANOINTING? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ANOINTED?
Study References: 2 Kings 9:6, 1 John 2:27, James 5:14
Anointing is the ritual act of pouring aromatic oil over a person's head or entire body.
2 Kings 9:6; "So Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet
poured the oil over Jehu's head and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
I anoint you king over the LORD's people, Israel."(NLT)
By extension, the term is also applied to related acts of sprinkling, dousing, or smearing
a person or object with any perfumed oil, milk, butter, or other fat.
Scented oils are used as perfumes and sharing them is an act of hospitality. In earliest
times, they were used to introduce a divine influence or presence. Therefore, it was used
as a form of medicine and to get rid of dangerous spirits and demons from persons which
were believed to cause disease.
James 5:14 says; "Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to
come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord."(NLT)
God's anointing is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:38 says; "And you know that
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around
doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him."(NLT)
Another meaning for the word anointed is "chosen one." The Bible says that Jesus Christ
was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the Good News and free those who have
been held captive by sin (Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38). After Christ left the earth, He gave
us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a
specific purpose in furthering God's Kingdom (1 John 2:20). "Now He who establishes us
with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the
Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee" (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).
