Luke 18:9-14; "To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:
“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
According to the teaching above, the righteous man was closer in relationship with God, no doubt! But God did not approve his action, he was not justified before God, meaning that God did not count him as a righteous man even if he had claimed that he was. He was only being SELF RIGHTEOUS.
I have come across some believers today with this same attitude, because they are approved of by men or themselves, they look down on you. For example, because they attend church activities more than you, pray more than you, quote the scriptures more than you, you name it! They look down on you. God is still the same, he does not approve of them nor see them as righteous even if they claim to be. God hates pride and resist it!
Humble yourself, under God's mighty hand, and he will lift you up in due time. Bible says in James 4:6b; "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."
Dear Father, I thank you for your grace. I pray that you create in me a pure heart and renew a humble spirit within me, so that i will remain in your favor and glory in Jesus mighty name! Amen!
